And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy. But these have no root; they believe for a while, and in time of testing fall away.
(Luke 8:13 ESV)
Excitement for something is the standard today by which we measure one’s commitment. If one is not ‘excited’, then they should be dispensed with. You hear the word before any new announcement – “We are excited to announce!”… I am reminded of every time Apple does a new product release:
One would think that Steve Jobs and Company had just set foot in the Sacntuary of God… “Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.” – Psalm 96:6. But alas, it is simply another electronic device.
I am baffled by how much excitement is forced into everything. Every program, event, product, and conversation is supposed to somehow generate “excitement”. No wonder our culture is so depressed.
Maybe our culture needs a good dose of self-control – you know, that good ‘ol fashioned, Spirit wrought fruit that is supposed to be a mark of his followers?
Alas, if we had such a thing then church might not be nearly as fun…
